Sarah Scherer is a certified mediator and intake lawyer at The Harris Law Firm's Englewood office. Sarah holds a Master’s in Social Work and has extensive experience counseling clients in divorce, custody, and other family law matters involving children.
A Colorado native who grew up in Colorado Springs, Sarah wanted to be an attorney since grade school. Sarah was raised by a single mother, so she also knows how important it is for children to have both parents involved in their lives as much as possible. Not having the easiest childhood, she saw law school as a way to help children and families struggling with similar situations.
Sarah earned her undergraduate degree from Adams State College in Alamosa and her MSW and JD from the University of Denver. While in law school she interned with the Rocky Mountain Victim Law Center, the Juvenile Division of the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office, the Adams County Department of Human Services as an Assistant County Attorney, and the Jefferson County DA’s Office as a Deputy District Attorney. During her graduate studies in Social Work, she interned with Arapahoe County DHS’ sexual abuse response team as a permanency caseworker and with Gateway Domestic Violence Services as a court advocate and intake counselor.
Prior to joining The Harris Law Firm, Sarah was a Judicial Fellow for Domestic Relations magistrates Hurst and Fliss in the 18th Judicial District and served as the liaison between the Denver Juvenile Court and Denver DHS’ Department of Child Welfare. She also served as a Policy Associate on the Children and Families team at the National Conference of State Legislatures, where she helped educate lawmakers from across the country on legislative policies involving adult, family and youth homelessness, child support and family law, domestic violence, and family economic security. Sarah has represented respondent parents in Dependency and Neglect cases and children in paternity cases as a Guardian ad Litem in Denver Juvenile Court.
A true social worker at heart, Sarah prioritizes communication and compassion. She takes the time to listen attentively to clients and takes a thoughtful and deliberate approach to helping them find meaningful solutions that align with their goals. Sarah’s background in social work proves tremendously helpful in her legal practice, and drives her firm belief that truly listening to people tell their stories is one of the most effective ways for clients to feel respected and understood.
When not practicing law, Sarah practices yoga, particularly yoga nidra, yin, and restorative yoga. She enjoys time with family, hiking, being outdoors, and watching her daughters participate in their extracurricular activities.
